Research cooperation between Canada and Italy

On October 11, 2011 the University of Ottawa hosted a round table on bilateral cooperation between Canadian and Italian universities and research centres, organized by the Embassy of Italy in cooperation with Crui (the Association of Presidents of Italian Universities) and the University of Ottawa.

Participants in Ottawa included presidents and other senior representatives of leading universities, research centres, and Canadian and Italian funding agencies, as well as senior public servants and distinguished representatives from the private and industry sector. The focus was on nutrition and health, Ict and nanotechnologies, energy and the environment (green technologies). Regarding the agri-food sector, among the future challenges are food safety, the sociological aspect of food, reduction of pesticide use.

Topics such as food safety and quality, where there are ongoing projects, can be used to increment scientific collaboration between the two countries. During the session, the foundation was laid for a joint project between the Italian National Research Council (Cnr), Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (Aafc), and the Italian industry counterparts Rummo Spa and Innova Spa.

The discussions brought also to the fore the need to strengthen existing relations between the two countries and intensify cooperation between their universities and research centres, also with the involvement of the private sector. In this framework, Cnr expressed its intent to increase the mobility of researchers for joint bilateral and multilateral research projects.
